The Birmingham-based gangster saga Peaky Blinders is returning, but this time on the big screen.
Cillian Murphy will once again play the iconic leader of the infamous razor gang, Tommy Shelby, in a film adaptation of the Netflix series, the premier for which is yet to be announced.
The project, produced in collaboration with BBC Films, aspires to deliver the same gritty charm that made the series a global sensation.
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy said in a recent interview with Netflix.
“It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
Murphy’s return as Shelby, a character who has captivated audiences over six seasons, is a mainstay.
In the meantime, Murphy has been working on several projects including an upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film called 28 Years Later.
The Peaky Blinders cast includes several notable stars alongside Murphy. Rebecca Ferguson, known for her roles in Dune and Mission: Impossible, and Barry Keoghan, who recently garnered acclaim for Saltburn and The Banshees of Inisherin, will join Murphy. Their involvement adds a promising dimension to the project, which is set to go into production later this year.
A peek into the plot
The plot of the upcoming film will extend the saga of the Shelby family, picking up where the series left off. Set between 1919 and 1934, Peaky Blinders has chronicled the rise and struggles of the Shelby family against a backdrop of profound social, economic, and political upheaval. The film aims to continue exploring these themes with the same intensity and depth that defined the series.
Tom Harper, who directed the first season of Peaky Blinders in 2013, will return as the film’s director. Harper expressed his excitement about reuniting with the team, including series creator Steven Knight.
“When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
Knight is excited that the story will be getting the ending it deserves after its six-season built up and is looking forward to a grand finale worthy of the award-winning series.
“I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen,” Knight said. “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war.”
