China’s presale box office revenue for the upcoming National Day holiday has exceeded 100 million yuan (about 14.3 million US dollars) as of Sunday.
Data from online film data platform Maoyan shows that three domestic productions — Bureau 749, Tiger Wolf Rabbit and The Volunteers: To the War 2 — currently top the advanced sales chart.
Science fiction film Bureau 749 has earned nearly 35 million yuan in presales, followed by crime feature Tiger Wolf Rabbit with presales of 25.5 million yuan. The two movies will open on Tuesday, the first day of the seven-day holiday.
The Volunteers: To the War 2, the second installment of the war trilogy directed by Chen Kaige, is slated to debut on Monday. The first instalment, The Volunteers: To the War, was released ahead of the National Day holiday last year and has generated an accumulated box office revenue of 857 million yuan to date.
Seven other releases, covering genres ranging from action to animation, will join the holiday lineup in one of the country’s most lucrative moviegoing seasons.
The National Day holiday has long been a fiercely competitive golden period for major films. Maoyan has predicted that the national box office on the first day of the holiday could hit 340 million yuan.
China’s total box office revenue for 2024 is currently at 34.7 billion yuan.
