American soul and gospel singer Emily Drinkard, more popularly known as Cissy Houston and mother of the late Whitney Houston, has died.

She reportedly passed away Monday morning at her New Jersey home, surrounded by her family. Houston had been under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease.

She died at the age of 91.

Her death comes days after her family and the music fraternity celebrated Cissy’s 91st birthday on September 30.

Houston was a founding member of the R&B group The Sweet Inspirations and sang backup for artistes such as Roy Hamilton, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Chaka Khan.

She was also a two-time Grammy Award winner.

Cissy was the aunt of singers Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick and a cousin of opera singer Leontyne Price. She was the grandmother of Whitney Houston’s only child, the late Bobbi Kristina Brown.
