The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) preliminary count of the 2024 Local Government Election was too close to declare a victor on Monday night (February 26).
The ECJ stated that an official count will be taken tomorrow, with the prospect of several closely contested divisions reaching the parish courts for a final verdict.
Arguably the biggest wins for the Mark Golding-led PNP include re-establishing political dominance in the Portmore Municipal Corporation and a shared control of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC).
The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) managed to maintain control of the municipalities of St Elizabeth, St Ann, St James, St Thomas, Portland and Trelawny.
The elections watchdog further indicated that as of 9:57 p.m., 6,556 boxes were counted, representing 97.5 per cent of the total 6,726 boxes.
