The ‘CODE CARE’ project under the Ministry of Health and Wellness has completed an additional 169 surgeries, bringing the total number of surgeries completed to 270.

CODE CARE was launched to reduce the backlog of surgeries on the island, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project aims to have 2,000 surgeries completed through partnership with the
private sector and the support of health professionals in the diaspora.

The update came from Governor General Sir Patrick Allen as he delivered the Throne Speech during the ceremonial opening of Parliament today (February 14).

Sir Patrick added that “the Government will continue this drive to improve service delivery and an additional 1,000 persons, waiting for more than three years, will have their surgeries completed”.

The initial target was to have 1,000 surgeries completed within 10 months, but now the ministry aims to have 2,000 surgeries completed.

Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Christopher Tufton announced last November that a total of 169 surgeries were completed in Western Jamaica since the project’s launch the previous May.

A total of $950 million has been allocated to the CODE CARE project, with most of the funding going to the renovation and upgrade of nine operating theatres at four hospitals.
