Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz turned in a virtuoso performance and dismissed South Africa 3-0 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex and it was a result coach Hubert Busby said was long overdue.

“It was a great result. Long overdue and secondly, just absolutely thrilled to have the people and the fans of Montego Bay out supporting us,” said Busby.

The Reggae Girlz owed their victory to returning skipper Khadija Shaw who netted twice in the 55th and 83rd minutes for her 56th and 57th goals for Jamaica, which is a record for both male and female.

“I’ve said it all along. We’re blessed to have one of the best strikers in the world playing in Jamaica,” Busby added. “We have a journey to go and we’re just on the first part of that journey. But the players know. They’re in professional environments every single week. They know what it’s like. They know what it means to compete and they also know what it means to put on the jersey to represent your country.”

Siobhan Wilson had opened the scoring for Jamaica in minute 28 as her corner kick sailed over the head of South Africa’s goalkeeper Andile Dlamini. It was Wilson’s first goal for Jamaica.

Shaw, who has not represented Jamaica in 14 months, then took charge with two goals.

The Reggae Girlz also continued their good record against African teams having beaten Nigeria 1-0 in 2021; Morocco 1-0 in 2023 and now their most impressive win against South Africa.

Both teams will meet again on Monday.
