Producer Collin ‘Bulby’ York is putting his own spin on legendary roots reggae tracks on his fifth studio album, aptly called 5.

The recently released collection brings a fresh yet familiar sound to roots reggae fans, as it features remixes of classic roots tracks, all with revamped rhythms. The Bulby York Music label product became available across all digital platforms on Friday, September 26.

For this album, York took a trip down memory lane, revisiting his Fat Eyes Productions vault to breathe new life into timeless tracks like Marcus Garvey, featuring the late Third World vocalist Bunny Rugs. He also reimagined Brother To Brother with velvet-voiced singer Beres Hammond and Junior Tucker, Babylon Burning with the late Cocoa Tea, and Hide And Seek featuring Freddie McGregor.

“I’m five chapters deep into the book of roots,” York shared recently, adding: “Each song is a page, and each rhythm is a heartbeat. I’m excited to share this new project with all of you.

The 5 album also includes recently dropped singles from fan-favourite reggae band Morgan’s Heritage (Solid Woman) and rising singer D’yani  (No More Time).

According to Reggae Vibes Online, “Featuring 12 tracks that blend roots reggae and lovers rock, this collection showcases top-tier vocalists riding expertly crafted riddims laid down by first-class musicians, all under the seasoned production and engineering of Bulby York. The album draws from both the treasured archives of Fat Eyes and more contemporary sessions.”

The Grammy-winning producer, arranger, and engineer, who boasts over 35 years’ experience, has collaborated with a diverse range of artistes. These include dancehall legend Shabba Ranks and iconic duo Sly & Robbie, to international superstars like Cyndi Lauper, Britney Spears, UB40, Chaka Khan, and Sean Paul.

In 1993, he co-founded the Fat Eyes label with Lynford “Fatta” Marshal, where they produced dancehall anthems like Beenie Man’s Memories and Suspense by Bounty Killer. York later ventured out on his own in 2016, launching Bulby York Music with the Epic and Ting album. He followed it up with Master Blaster in 2018, Heartcrafted in 2020, and Time and Colour in 2023.

His fifth studio album, 5, effortlessly blends his past and present work, showcasing his growth and evolution as an artiste and producer.

“This album is a reflection, a revelation, and a reminder that the journey is the reward,” York reasoned.
