Questions are being raised ahead of the Jamaica Volleyball Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for this Saturday, November 29, at the Sports Development Foundation, as incumbent president Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Cowan prepares to be challenged by former journalist and corporate media executive Claire Grant.
While the election itself has generated considerable interest, the days leading up to the AGM have been marked by concerns regarding transparency and procedural clarity, particularly from within affiliate clubs.
In correspondence seen by this publication, concerns were raised around several issues following the rescheduling of the AGM, which was originally set for October 29 but postponed because of Hurricane Melissa. The new date presents attendance challenges for previously identified representatives.
Attention was also drawn to what was described as critical outstanding documents necessary to allow affiliates to properly prepare for Saturday’s meeting. Among the material requested are the complete minutes of the 2023 AGM, a full list of eligible voters, and the reports to be presented at the AGM, including those from the president, general secretary and treasurer, the latter requiring full financial statements.
Additionally, clarification has been sought on two constitutional matters: whether the official notice of the AGM should have been made public via media channels, and why nominations from the floor are not being allowed. The club has requested that the relevant section of the JaVA constitution be cited to support the latter position.
Nominations for executive positions closed on October 24, ahead of the originally scheduled meeting, with Cowan and Grant confirmed as candidates for the presidency. Audley Weir and Cortess Whilby will contest the position of general secretary, while the treasurer’s post has attracted three nominees: Andrew Thomas, Abiola Bertram and Fiona Binns.
In a statement sent to stakeholders on November 21, General Secretary Weir extended well-wishes following the hurricane and thanked clubs for their resilience and continued support. He confirmed the revised AGM date and reminded affiliates of the proxy deadline of November 28 for those unable to attend. With key executive posts up for decision, including the presidency, this weekend’s meeting is expected to be closely watched. However, with lingering questions around documentation, voting eligibility and procedural transparency, affiliates will be hoping for a smooth and decisive AGM that prioritizes good governance and the continued development of volleyball in Jamaica.
