The Constituency Development Fund (CDF) has proven to be instrumental in the provision of crucial support to citizens throughout the island, thanks to the efforts of parliamentary representatives.
The primary objective of the CDF is to foster human and infrastructure development at the community and constituency levels by establishing sustainable projects.
The CDF’s initiatives encompass a wide range of areas, including infrastructure development, education assistance, cultural and sporting activities, economic empowerment, disaster mitigation, as well as welfare and emergency aid. Over the years, CDF resources have been utilised to rehabilitate homes for indigent individuals, repair roads, undertake agricultural ventures, refurbish basic schools and community centres, offer back-to-school aid, and contribute to sports and healthy lifestyle programmes.
Juliet Holness, Member of Parliament for St. Andrew East Rural, emphasised that Members of Parliament receive a total of $20 million under the CDF. During an appearance on the Love 101 radio program, ‘Good Morning Minister,’ on Wednesday (June 21), Holness explained the purpose of the CDF, stating that it serves as an emergency response mechanism in situations where representatives have advocated for assistance from other entities.

She elaborated, “If you need to repair a road and the process is not progressing as quickly as you would like, you can now turn to the CDF and consult with your community members or constituents to determine their priorities. If they express the need for $1 million to fix a particular road, you can allocate the funds through the CDF.”
Holness, who also serves as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, highlighted that people are gradually recognising that the government functions in an accountable manner. She stated, “A significant aspect of that accountability lies in ensuring that the beneficiaries genuinely require assistance and that their identities can be tracked.”
The CDF has emerged as a vital mechanism for Members of Parliament to address pressing community needs efficiently and effectively. Through its support, the CDF is fostering positive development and contributing to the betterment of communities across Jamaica. As awareness of the fund continues to grow, it is anticipated that more constituents will benefit from the impactful projects and initiatives facilitated by the CDF.
