The Consular Corps of Jamaica has announced its commitment to provide assistance to the people of Haiti.

Led by Robert Scott, the dean of the Consular Corps of Jamaica and honorary consul general to Latvia, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Order of St. George on Friday, October 20. The MOU outlines the terms for the collaboration between the Consular Corps of Jamaica and the Order of St. George to provide essential medical supplies to Haiti, with a special focus on wound-care items.

The ceremony saw members of the consular corps, the Order of St George, and representatives from Food for the Poor USA in attendance.

Scott, who also leads the Order of St. George in Jamaica, expressed that the Order had a genuine desire to assist Haiti, especially with alleviating medical supply shortages during crises. He said: “The Consular Corps sprang into action, reaching out to a well-entrenched entity to assist in the shipping and distribution on the ground.”

The Order of St. George will secure donations of hospital supplies by leveraging its extensive network in the United States. Scott revealed that the wheels of this potentially life-saving initiative are already in motion, with temporary storage facilities secured in Atlanta. The first container shipment of 26 pallets has already been collected and is being housed in New Jersey for dispatch to Haiti by early December.

Scott underlined that the collaboration is not a short-term response but a long-term commitment aimed at assisting countries in the region facing challenges in sourcing medical supplies, especially during times of disaster.
