
Corinaldi Avenue Primary School, winners of the inaugural Scotiabank U11 Children Championship in Jamaica, departs the island for Lima, Peru, on Wednesday, November 26, to represent the country in the regional championship event.
The Jamaican champions, who are also the county of Cornwall Champions, will compete against the champions of Peru, Chile, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.
While there, the players will also participate in a Concacaf-led Grassroots Clinic.
Recardo Esmie, coach of the Corinaldi Avenue Primary football team, is just as excited as his players for the opportunity to head to Peru.
“I want to say thanks to Scotiabank for giving the youngsters this opportunity so that they can showcase their talent. They are super excited, they can’t wait for the competition to start, and it’s a good feeling. I am overwhelmed, the youngsters are happy and excited, and we are truly looking forward to the experience.”
Deon Stern-Anglin, the principal of Corinaldi Avenue Primary, is filled with pride at the opportunity presented to her school.
“We are filled with great pride and joy that we get to represent the country in this way. This school is always doing well, we are a home of champions, and for us to represent the country is a great achievement for us,” she said. “We want to thank God, and we want to thank the sponsors, Scotiabank, for giving us this opportunity, and we want to thank Mr Andrew Edwards for steering such a competition. We are looking forward to doing our best in Lima, Peru.”
The delegation of 10 will be led by Jamaican tournament director, Andrew Edwards, and include and players and two coaches from Corinaldi Avenue Primary School.
“It is absolutely amazing that Corinaldi Avenue Primary School, in spite of devastation to the school and members of the school community, are prepared and ready to compete in the Scotiabank U11 Intercontinental Championship. This experience will do wonders for these young footballers, all of whom I believe have the wherewithal to become top players for Jamaica,” said Edwards.
“I am looking forward to them bringing the Jamaican flair and spice to the tournament, and hope that they will have an excellent tournament,” he continued.
The delegation will depart from the Sangster International Airport at 12.19 pm on Copa Airlines via Panama City. The delegation returns on Sunday, November 30th.
