Bill Cosby has been found liable in a civil case involving allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted former waitress Donna Motsinger more than 50 years ago.
A jury awarded Motsinger US$59.25 million in damages, including compensation for past and future trauma, along with a large punitive award. Cosby’s legal team has indicated plans to appeal the decision.
Motsinger accused Cosby of attacking her in 1972 after an encounter tied to a performance at the now-defunct Circle Star Theatre in California. Her lawsuit also named his production company, alleging it failed to ensure her safety.
The case adds to a long list of legal battles involving Cosby, who was once widely known for The Cosby Show. His 2018 criminal conviction was overturned in 2021, but civil claims against him have continued to move through the courts.
