Fenley Douglas, councillor for the Waterford Division, is calling on the National Works Agency (NWA) to take immediate action to clean the main Adair Drive drain in Portmore, St Catherine.
This call comes as Hurricane Beryl is expected to impact the island by Wednesday, July 3.
Douglas, in a statement on Sunday, June 30, said he has made several calls to the NWA to tackle the issue, which he described as crucial for channelling stormwater out of Portmore to the sea, but has been neglected despite repeated calls for attention.
“I have made repeated calls to the agency to address this drain as recently as two weeks ago,” stated councillor Douglas. “With the impending hurricane potentially affecting Jamaica, the residents of Portmore will be severely impacted.”
The councillor added that the Adair Drive drain plays a crucial role in preventing flooding in Waterford. He noted that without prompt intervention, Waterford residents face the threat of severe flooding and the resulting hardships that could take months to overcome.
“In view of this impending scenario, I am putting the NWA on notice that the people of Waterford are demanding action by the latest Tuesday or risk protest actions of immense magnitude,” warned Douglas.
Douglas said immediate action from the NWA is imperative to safeguard the well-being and safety of Portmore residents.
