Residents of Portmore will now have easier access to furniture and appliances through the opening of a second Courts location in the Sunshine City at Braeton Parkway Square, one of the furniture and appliance seller’s largest investments in Jamaica.

The newly constructed building is a multimillion-dollar project that is expected to offer residents convenience and a large array of home appliances, electronic devices, optical eyecare and eyewear, and micro-loans to purchase products and accessories at an affordable cost.

While speaking at the grand opening on Wednesday, Edwin Vaquerano, managing director of parent company Unicomer, shared that the store will be opened with three brands: Courts Jamaica, Courts Optical, and Courts Ready Cash.

“Courts has been more than just a name or just a store. It has become a household name in the lives of Jamaicans. We take immense pride in knowing that most Jamaicans have at one point or another purchased something from Courts, not just purchasing, but enjoying every single item or service from us,” said Vaquerano.

Courts has also partnered with RadioShack to provide headphones and other electronic devices that can be used for smartphones and gadgets.

The new store, located on a busy stretch near popular stores like Fontana Pharmacy, PriceSmart, and Sovereign Village, will form part of an economic boom of sorts in the city.

Jermaine Blair, general manager for the new location, said that Courts customers in the growing municipality of Portmore have long demanded convenience and easier access to its products and services, and this new location will meet that demand.

“As a growing city, the citizens of Portmore are transitioning from that of a dormitory community to support growing commercial activity within this community. The convenience has become a demand for the citizens here, and so Court Jamaica Limited has answered that call,” said Blair.

He noted that the Courts location at Portmore Mall is still open, and the new store will ensure that residents from either side of the Sunshine City have access to the company’s many services and products.

The initiative was welcomed by the Deputy Mayor of Portmore Alrick Campbell, who brought remarks on behalf of Mayor Leon Thomas.

“Courts is a household name in Jamaica, and as the community of Portmore continues to grow, the demand for quality products and services increases. Courts has seen growth through its first Portmore store, and I believe this is why they have decided to make this significant investment in our city,” said Campbell.

He added that the new store will bring new employment opportunities for residents, and he looks forward to the economic development that the new location will bring to the Sunshine City.

The same sentiments were echoed by Member of Parliament for East Central St Catherine Alando Terrelonge, who said the new store is a testament that Jamaica continues to be the place of choice for business.

“Courts opening here today in Portmore signifies not only the financial capital that exists in Portmore but also the financial capital that exists in Jamaica. Whilst many Jamaicans for various reasons would like to echo the propaganda that nothing nah gwan a Jamaica, things are rough, and things are tough, Courts opening a flagship store in Portmore is testament to the growing economic power that is brand Jamaica,” said Terrelonge.

Horace Chang, in his capacity as deputy prime minister, also commended Courts for its investment in brand Jamaica, tooting the company for its 64 years of quality and affordable products and services.

Courts Jamaica Limited opened its first store in Jamaica and the Caribbean in 1959 in Cross Roads, Kingston. The brand has since expanded to every parish, with more than 20 locations islandwide. Courts will also open new stores in Spanish Town, Mandeville, and Montego Bay.
