Renown Cognac maker Courvoisier came to Kingston last week and put on a Master Class with its Chief Blender of Courvoisier, Thibaut Hontanx from France, explaining the history of the brand and what makes it unique as one of the world’s best.

Hontanx explained that what gives Courvoisier its unique, consistent colouring is caramel. He explained the difference between VS, VSOP and XO. VS and VSOP were both launched in 1828.

VS is aged for at least two years and fully aged up to eight years. It has strong notes of fresh fruit, particularly pear, apple and grapefruit.

It bears an oaky taste, VSOP, which is very popular in Jamaica, has the scent of stone fruits, jasmine and gingerbread. It is a very smooth cognac with a distinct touch of oak.

There is a delicate marriage of the four crus fins bois, borderies, petite champagne and grande champagne.

VSOP is carefully aged up to 12 years in Courvoisier’s own proprietary barrels, employing ageing techniques.

VSOP is aged up to 12 years.

XO is the gold medal of the three, top tier, as they say. Here one finds a delicately rich and complex autumn bouquet of creme brûlée, candied orange and Iris flowers.

The original recipe dates back to 1984, and so it is the youngest in the stable and is a product of the modern age. It is aged for a minimum of 10 years and is matured up to 25 years.

Managing Director of the Campari Group (Jamaica), Daniel Caron, said: “As of November 2025, Courvoisier officially joined the Campari Group portfolio, marking a significant milestone in our continued commitment to expanding our premium offerings and delivering exceptional value to our customers and stakeholders worldwide.

“Over the years, the Courvoisier brand has evolved from a regional craft to one of the world’s most respected cognac houses, celebrated for its elegance, character and unmistakable style. Every bottle reflects meticulous craftsmanship from the careful selection of faux-de-vie to the refined ageing techniques that preserve its signature balance.

“It is a brand that continues to thrive by embracing innovation, ensuring its legacy continues to inspire both seasoned connoisseurs and new enthusiasts.”
