The Credit Unions of Jamaica (CUJ), led by the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL), have activated a robust, islandwide relief operation to support devastated families and communities across the hardest-hit parishes in the wake of Hurricane Melissa—the most catastrophic storm to impact the country in over 30 years.
Representing 23 credit unions, over 100 branches, and more than one million members, the movement has once again demonstrated its foundational commitment to the co-operative principle of concern for community, supported by an enduring philosophy of people helping people.
Through a coordinated partnership with CUNA Caribbean Insurance Jamaica and the NeXGen Changemakers youth arm, the credit union movement deployed over 150 volunteers to assemble and distribute more than 2,000 emergency relief packages that included food, hygiene supplies, water, and basic shelter items.
