Cuba has received a big donation from the People’s Republic of China, consisting of essential parts and accessories for power generators to strengthen the national electricity grid.
This donation is part of China’s efforts to support Cuba, based on agreements between Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The donation, which includes 69 tons of radiators, engines, and other related supplies, is part of China’s ‘Project of Equipment’ and ‘Spare Parts for Power Generators’. This initiative is the second package of assistance China has provided to Cuba in 2024, with a focus on restoring approximately 400 MW of power across more than 70 diesel and fuel oil plants nationwide.
China’s ambassador to Cuba, Hua Xin, lauded the strong bond of friendship between the two nations, emphasising their continued efforts to build a shared future. He also commended the results of their cooperation across various sectors.
On behalf of the Cuban government, Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Déborah Rivas Saavedra thanked China for the donation, which will aid in the repair of 38 diesel generators and the maintenance of 50 fuel oil generators. This contribution is expected to provide electricity to 53,200 homes across the island, helping to improve the sustainability of Cuba’s energy sector and the well-being of its people.
Rivas Saavedra also acknowledged the dedication of Cuba’s electricity workers, noting the challenges they face, particularly due to the limitations imposed by the current US policy towards Cuba.
