The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) says imports exceeding the US$100 threshold will be subject to duty charges on the full declared value of the shipment.

The agency, in an advisory on Thursday, April 11, sought to clarify the duty calculations on shipments. It explained that should a shipment be declared with a value of US$101, the duty will be calculated on the full amount, not just the excess of US$1.

“Importers and members of the public are, therefore, being reminded to familiarise themselves with customs policies and imports procedures to ensure smooth and efficient clearance of imported goods,” Customs said.

This follows an announcement by Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke that the Government will move the duty-free threshold for personal items imported into Jamaica from US$50 to US$100, effective this month.
