The Miami Heat’s high-octane offence hit a wall on Wednesday night, falling to the Dallas Mavericks 118-108.

Even without star Norman Powell, the loss was a missed chance for Miami, a sentiment that lingered in the locker room.

This was the second time the teams faced off, after Miami eked out a 106-102 win earlier, and both games ended up being the Heat’s lowest scoring outings of the season. On top of that, Wednesday’s defeat saw Miami play at its slowest pace all year, logging just 100 possessions in 48 minutes.

Dallas disrupted Miami’s flow by clogging passing lanes and jamming spacing, leaving the Heat struggling to use their usual offensive weapons. The result was a rough shooting night: 40% from the field and just 30% from beyond the arc.

Coming off a dominant win over the Los Angeles Clippers, Miami quickly came back down to earth, as Dallas got a lift from rookie Cooper Flagg and veteran Anthony Davis. Davis posted 17 points and 17 rebounds, while Flagg added 22 points, but it was their defensive pressure that really threw Miami off balance. Tyler Herro, who scored 20 in the first half, was completely silenced in the second.

With the loss, Miami falls to 14-8 and will look to rebound Friday night against the Orlando Magic.
