As the country celebrates its 61st anniversary of Independence, the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) says it takes immense pride in its pivotal role in fostering economic independence for thousands of Jamaicans.
Over the years, the DBJ has been a driving force behind economic growth, entrepreneurship, and job creation, propelling the nation towards prosperity and self-reliance.
Through its core initiatives, the DBJ has successfully facilitated economic development, with a strong emphasis on supporting micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as well as creating employment opportunities, including in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.
The DBJ’s main products, including various loan offerings, have been instrumental in nurturing and expanding businesses across diverse sectors. Over the last decade alone, the DBJ issued approximately 100,000 loans valued at J$45 billion, supporting the creation of 43,000 new jobs, with a significant 88 per cent going to MSMEs. Notably, the agribusiness and energy sectors have received special attention, with the DBJ issuing 14,000 loans valuing $11 billion in agribusiness since 2013 and over 300 loans amounting to $4 billion in energy during the same period.
The DBJ’s commitment to the growth of MSMEs is further evident in its featured SME loan products, offering tailored financial solutions to entrepreneurs. These loan products include the General MSME, Agribiz MSME, Energy MSME, and Energy for Home; and Energy Audit Grants, which provide opportunities for businesses to flourish and innovate.
Moreover, the DBJ’s support extends beyond loans, with the Credit Enhancement Facility (CEF) guarantee for MSMEs providing collateral assistance to secure loans. Since 2009, the DBJ has supported over 1,700 businesses, guaranteeing access to $21 billion in loans through more than 15 lenders.
In addition to financial assistance, the DBJ has played a key role in the promotion and development of the entrepreneurship in Jamaica through the provision of technical assistance and grant financing. Over 5000 micro-, small- and medium-sized firms have been supported since 2012 to improve their business operations, enter new markets, access capital and grow their businesses through programmes such as the Voucher for Technical Assistance, Jamaica Business Fund, the BIGEE programme and its products such as IGNITE, IGF, Incubation & Acceleration services.
The DBJ’s support has created a foundation for entrepreneurs and their ideas to become independent businesses that can create value for the owners, employees and their families.

The DBJ has been instrumental in promoting equity markets and facilitating private capital investments. The establishment of multiple funds, including SME Funds and the Angel Investment Fund, has been pivotal in driving investments, fostering innovation, and supporting local entrepreneurs.
The DBJ has also played a significant role in job creation. In the BPO sector alone, the DBJ’s support has facilitated the establishment of over 20 BPO facilities, resulting in the creation of more than 25,000 new jobs since 2012.
Furthermore, the DBJ’s involvement in privatisation and public-private partnerships (PPPs) has been transformative, unlocking underutilised Government assets and attracting over $140 billion in investments from more than 30 transactions. The recent $5.5 billion investment in the German Ship Repair project, which has generated 300 high-skilled jobs, stands as a testament to the DBJ’s impact.
The DBJ is equally dedicated to empowering the youth and supporting education. Initiatives such as the Rio Tinto Scholarships and the National Business Model Competition, have equipped students and young entrepreneurs with the tools and resources needed to succeed in the business world.
As Jamaica commemorates its independence, the DBJ reaffirmed its commitment to driving economic growth, fostering entrepreneurship, and empowering Jamaicans to achieve financial independence.

Through its various programmes and partnerships, the DBJ continues to make a significant difference in the lives of countless Jamaicans, strengthening the country’s position as a prosperous and thriving nation.
