Penang, Malaysia. Photos of an inked index finger. In Malaysia, after casting your votes in an election, your index finger will be inked to prevent double voting. Finger in purple is taken on the day of election. The other photos (taken on 3rd and 5th day) shows how the ink starts to turn brown and eventually disappears or fades from the finger.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) is reminding that the deadline for eligible persons who are desirous of being added to the May 31, 2024 Voters’ List is March 31.

The EOJ emphasises the importance of voter registration, as it enables individuals to exercise their right to vote. Eligible individuals, those aged 18 years and older who are Jamaican citizens, or Commonwealth citizens who have resided in Jamaica for at least 12 consecutive months, may apply for their voter ID card.

Director of Elections, Glasspole Brown, stated: “Participation in the electoral process is fundamental to the functioning of our democracy; we urge all eligible members of the public, who have not yet registered to take this opportunity to do so before the March 31 deadline”.

Prospective electors are required to apply in-person at any EOJ constituency office islandwide and are advised to wear only bright or dark-coloured clothing to facilitate the process of taking their photograph. After the in-office application, the EOJ will send a team to verify the applicant’s residence, thereby finalising the application process.

Registering to vote is free of cost. EOJ constituency office locations can be accessed on the ECJ’s website at www.ecj.com.jm/address.

Persons already on the Voters’ List are reminded not to re-apply, and to request a renewal if their voter ID card is expired.

The voters’ list is published twice per year, on May 31 and November 30. Voter identification cards for those added to the May 2024 list will be distributed in June.

Individuals seeking more information on voter registration and electoral procedures can visit the EOJ website or contact the nearest EOJ office.

The EOJ is an independent body responsible for the administration of democratic processes in Jamaica, including voter registration, conducting elections, and ensuring compliance with electoral laws and regulations.
