The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) says it is appalled that, once again, thousands of civil servants have not received their salaries, which were due on April 25th .

The PNP noted that this follows the same scenario last month, where civil servants had to wait days and weeks after the due date to receive their salaries.

Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Julian Robinson, said “To compound the issue of not receiving their salaries on time is the total lack of communication from the Government to indicate that there were problems processing the salary payments.”

“This is a total disregard and disrespect for the welfare of public servants, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck and won’t be able to buy food, pay their rent or mortgage or send their children to school. The Government must do better,” Robinson continued.

DISSATISFACTION AMONG CIVIL SERVANTS

According to the Opposition, this late payment comes against the background of restiveness and dissatisfaction among civil servants about the manner in which the public sector compensation review was handled, where many feel they are worse off than before.

With this, Robinson is calling on the Government to immediately communicate a definitive timeframe for when salaries are going to be paid and to cover the fees and penalties that civil servants may incur as a result of the late payment of salaries.
