Dominican Republic Ambassador to Jamaica Angie Martinez donated over 500 books and literary material to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus on behalf of her country on Monday (May 12)..

“This is not just a transfer of sources,” Martinez stated. “It is a gesture of accured knowledge, mutual respect, and friendship.”

The donation was made not just for the University of the West Indies, but also to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the opening of official diplomatic relations between Jamaica and its Spanish-Caribbean neighbour.

Of the several hundred books provided, many of the various genres of literature were represented. According to the ambassador, works of poetry, drama, science, social, political, and cultural significance were gathered and handed over.

“These are diverse and vibrant intellectual pieces. They will now become part of the prestigious UWI Library, and perform contributions…for future generations,” she added.

The majority of the books provided are written in Spanish, the primary and official language of the Dominican Republic.

Several of the Books gifted by the Dominican Republic, wrapped in the country’s national colours.

As she concluded, Ambassador Martinez stressed the importance of the good relations between her nation and the University of the West Indies, expressing her hope for deeper and continued cooperation to persist in the years to come.

“This gift is a culmination of the ambition for a robust and sustainable academic partnership between UWI and the Dominican Republic, which includes senior changes, joint research projects, with more Dominican students coming to the Mona Campus, and more Jamaican students going to school at our Universities. The ambassador of the Dominican Republic will always support these initiatives, even as I come to end of my tenure in that post.”
