Dominican Republic marks independence with reception at Devon House

The Embassy of the Dominican Republic hosted a reception in St Andrew to mark the country’s 182nd anniversary of Independence, bringing together Jamaican officials, members of the diplomatic corps, private sector representatives and members of the Dominican community for an evening highlighting the growing ties between the two countries.

Dominican Ambassador to Jamaica, Manuel Durán, welcomed guests at Devon House, which was illuminated in the colours of the Dominican flag for two consecutive days as a symbol of friendship between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Representing the Jamaican Government was State Foreign Affairs Minister Alando Terrelonge, who acknowledged the expanding cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade, investment and regional engagement.

During the event, remarks highlighted the Dominican Republic’s sustained economic growth and its increasing engagement with Caribbean partners, underscoring the importance of strengthening cooperation across the region.

As part of the celebration, three recognitions were presented to initiatives reflecting the expanding economic links between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Honoured were Chef Erika and the Perfect Host, Dominican-led ventures beginning operations in Jamaica, as well as InterEnergy Group, a company with strategic participation in the energy sectors of both Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Guests were also invited to experience Dominican culinary traditions through a curated tasting that featured signature flavours such as cassava empanadas, the refreshing frío-frío, traditional bread pudding and other classic preparations reflecting the country’s rich gastronomic heritage.

Justice Dale Palmer imposed the sentence: 12 years for sexual intercourse with a person under 16, and an additional five years for sexual touching, to run concurrently. The priest must serve at least eight years before becoming eligible for parole.
