The Government of the Dominican Republic has dispatched a substantial humanitarian aid mission to Jamaica, reaffirming its steadfast solidarity with the people of Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Melissa. 

The category five storm, regarded as the most powerful to strike the island in modern history, has caused widespread destruction across multiple parishes, leaving thousands displaced, homes and infrastructure damaged, and essential services severely disrupted.

The first of several shipments of humanitarian assistance arrived over the weekend aboard a Dominican Air Force aircraft carrying vital relief supplies. The cargo included drinking water, rehydration fluids, non-perishable food items, face masks, and medical materials, all aimed at supporting the ongoing emergency and recovery operations.

The aid will be directed especially toward the hardest-hit communities in St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and St James—areas still struggling with limited access to clean water, healthcare, and shelter.

The shipment was formally received by Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton, on behalf of the Government of Jamaica, who conveyed his appreciation to the Dominican Republic for its timely and meaningful gesture of support, noting that the assistance would significantly bolster Jamaica’s ongoing response to the humanitarian challenges facing affected families.

Representing the Dominican Government, Ambassador Manuel Durán emphasised the deep spirit of regional unity and cooperation that underscores this initiative.

“In moments of greatest adversity, the Caribbean must stand united as one family,” Ambassador Durán affirmed. “The Dominican Republic is profoundly moved by the pain and loss endured by our Jamaican brothers and sisters, and we remain committed to walking with them on the road to recovery and rebuilding.”

Ambassador Durán also extended gratitude to the Jamaican authorities for their seamless collaboration in facilitating the delivery and distribution of aid.

He commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) for their professionalism and commitment to ensuring that the relief supplies swiftly reach the communities in greatest need.

The Dominican Republic’s contribution forms part of a broader effort by regional partners to stand in solidarity with Jamaica during this challenging time. It reflects the enduring friendship and cooperation that bind the Caribbean nations together, guided by shared values of compassion, resilience, and mutual support.

The Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Kingston has indicated that additional humanitarian shipments are being coordinated to further assist with Jamaica’s relief and recovery efforts in the days ahead.
