It’s a beautiful day to be happy! If you are wondering why, it’s International Day of Happiness and what better way to celebrate the day than to be happy, of course!

World Happiness Day has been celebrated annually on March 20 since 2013. This day was first introduced by United Nations after an initiative by Bhutan, which believed in the importance of national happiness.

The ‘Happy’ Day is celebrated to remind individuals of the importance of happiness and to cherish every moment of life while being kind and caring toward each other.

Happiness is a fundamental human goal that most people desire. The United Nations General Assembly uses this day as a gentle reminder to recognise the need for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples.”

In 2015, the UN launched the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which seek to end poverty, reduce inequality and protect the planet – three key aspects that lead to well-being and happiness.

The United Nations invites each person across the world to join in celebration of the International Day of Happiness.

This year’s theme for International Day of Happiness is, ‘Be Mindful. Be Grateful. Be Kind.’

There are lots of issues in the world right now that may cause you to become disheartened. While you can’t always change what is happening, but you can always choose how you respond.

Here are five quotes you can use anytime to help make life happier and kinder.

“Happiness for me is peace of mind. Being at peace with myself, at peace with God, at peace with my family,” —Mary J. Blige.

“Happiness floats. It doesn’t need you to hold it down. It doesn’t need anything,” —Naomi Shihab Nye.

“Happiness is knowing there is a God…and being on speaking terms with him,” —Nancy M. Nichols.

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature,” —Marcuse Aurelius
