Believe it or not, there was a time when learning almost always began with the phrase, “Go to the library.” Today, it begins with, “Let me check YouTube.”
Need to replace a leaking faucet? There is a tutorial. Want to prepare authentic Jamaican oxtail, master Excel, build a gaming computer, repair a washing machine, learn Spanish, change the brakes on your car, tie a Windsor knot, play the piano, understand artificial intelligence, prepare for a job interview, or even learn chess? Someone, somewhere, has already created a video explaining exactly how to do it. More importantly, most of them are willing to teach it for free.
Without fanfare, an entirely new university has emerged. It has no admissions office, no dormitories, no graduation ceremonies and no tuition bills. Its classrooms fit inside a smartphone or tablet. Its professors are mechanics, grandmothers, software engineers, chefs, doctors, electricians, artists and hobbyists from every corner of the globe.
Welcome to the University of TikTok.
The name is, of course, symbolic. Learning today is spread across TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Duolingo and dozens of other digital platforms. Together they have fundamentally altered how knowledge is discovered, shared and consumed.
The numbers explain why this matters. According to the Pew Research Center, approximately nine in ten American teenagers use YouTube, making it by far the most widely used platform among young people. Nearly three-quarters visit it every day, while roughly one-third report using at least one major social media platform almost constantly. TikTok and Instagram each attract around six in ten teenagers. That reality represents far more than entertainment. It represents a profound shift in education.
Previous generations were trained to search for information. Today’s generation expects information to find them. Algorithms now function almost like academic advisers, constantly recommending the next lesson based on previous interests. Watch one woodworking video and suddenly there are hundreds more. Search for investment strategies and an endless stream of financial educators appears. Curiosity has become infinitely scalable.
The greatest strength of this new educational ecosystem is accessibility.
Jamaica offers its own compelling case study in this educational transformation. Long before artificial intelligence became a household term, local education technology company EduFocal recognised that students learn differently when technology makes education interactive rather than passive. Founded by Gordon Swaby in 2012, the platform has used gamification, adaptive learning and online instruction to help prepare thousands of students for GSAT and, later, PEP examinations.
Today, EduFocal has evolved into a comprehensive online learning ecosystem serving more than 100,000 users, offering everything from self-paced study to live virtual classes. Its success illustrates an important reality: the future of education is not simply about putting textbooks on a screen. It is about reimagining how learning takes place, using technology to make education more engaging, more personalised and more accessible. In many respects, Jamaica has been ahead of the curve in demonstrating that world-class educational innovation can emerge from a small island with big ideas.
Traditional education has always faced barriers. Tuition can be expensive. Geography limits access to experts. Schedules are inflexible. Not everyone can attend university full-time while raising children or working two jobs. Digital learning removes many of those barriers. A teenager in rural Jamaica can learn coding from an engineer in California. A retiree in Kingston can study photography from a professional in Tokyo. A young entrepreneur in Nairobi can learn digital marketing from a business owner in London. Knowledge has become dramatically more democratic than at any point in human history.
Equally important is the format itself.
Educational psychologists have long recognised that many people learn more effectively by seeing than by reading. Watching someone prepare a meal or assemble a computer often communicates more than several pages of written instructions. Short-form video combines demonstration, repetition and visual reinforcement into lessons that can be paused, replayed and revisited whenever necessary.
That convenience has quietly changed expectations.
When something breaks in the house today, many people no longer reach first for an instruction manual. They reach for their phones. Before hiring someone, they often ask YouTube whether they can solve the problem themselves.
The implications for traditional educational institutions are enormous.
Universities have historically held three significant advantages: access to expert knowledge, recognised credentials and opportunities for networking. The first of those advantages is steadily shrinking.
Knowledge is no longer the scarce commodity it once was. Today, the scarce commodity is the ability to discern which knowledge is accurate, trustworthy and worth applying.
The internet has made expertise remarkably accessible. The competitive advantage of universities increasingly lies not in possessing information but in helping students evaluate it, organise it, apply it and verify its credibility. That distinction may determine which institutions flourish over the next generation.
This does not mean universities are becoming obsolete. Quite the opposite. It means their value proposition must evolve.
Employers will still need accountants who understand professional standards, engineers who can safely design bridges, surgeons who have completed supervised clinical training and lawyers who understand complex legal systems. No number of TikTok videos can replace years of accredited professional preparation.
However, universities may need to spend less time delivering information and considerably more time developing critical thinking, ethical reasoning, collaboration, creativity and problem-solving. Artificial intelligence can retrieve information in seconds. Human judgment remains much harder to automate.
There is another challenge that deserves equal attention.
The University of TikTok has no admissions standards, but neither does it have academic peer review. Brilliant experts share space with confident amateurs. Outstanding instruction competes alongside misinformation delivered with remarkable production quality. A persuasive presenter is not necessarily a qualified one.
As more people receive news and educational content while casually scrolling social media, digital literacy becomes every bit as important as digital access. Future generations must learn not only how to consume information but how to question it. Who created this content? What evidence supports these claims? Is there independent verification? Does the creator benefit financially from persuading the audience? Those questions may become just as important as algebra or grammar in preparing students for modern life.
The more intriguing question, however, is not whether people can learn on TikTok, YouTube or Instagram. They clearly can. The more important question is whether society will eventually recognise that learning in the same way it recognises a university degree.
That possibility is no longer far-fetched.
The world has already begun embracing micro-credentials, digital badges and industry certifications. Google Career Certificates, AWS certifications, Microsoft’s professional credentials and IBM’s SkillsBuild programme are increasingly recognised by employers for skills-based roles. Coursera, edX and LinkedIn Learning have demonstrated that millions of people are prepared to learn in shorter, targeted bursts rather than commit immediately to a four-year degree. Increasingly, employers are asking not only, “Where did you study?” but also, “What can you actually do?”
Perhaps the next evolution is not universities competing against TikTok, but universities learning from TikTok.
Imagine degree programmes built around five- or ten-minute learning modules, interactive simulations, gamified assessments and artificial intelligence tutors available around the clock. Students could progress at their own pace, earning stackable micro-credentials that eventually combine into diplomas and degrees. Learning would become less about spending a fixed number of years in a classroom and more about demonstrating genuine competence.
The economic implications could be profound. Student loan debt in the United States now exceeds US$1.7 trillion. And, according to the Jamaica Observer as of December 2025, the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB) had 35,360 active loans with a combined value of approximately J$29 billion as of December 2025. Of those loans, 8,890 were current, 11,634 were delinquent, and 14,836 were in moratorium, representing students who were still pursuing their studies or within the grace period before repayment begins.
Many graduates spend years repaying loans before they begin building wealth. If technology can deliver high-quality education at a fraction of today’s cost, future generations may become far more selective about assuming six-figure debt for credentials that could eventually be earned in more flexible and affordable ways.
There are hints of that future every day. Millions of people are learning languages on Duolingo, improving at chess through online platforms, mastering coding through YouTube, earning professional certificates online and acquiring practical skills whenever they have a few spare minutes. They are not waiting for a semester to begin. They are learning continuously.
Education has never really been about buildings. It has always been about learning.
The blackboard replaced the slate. The overhead projector replaced the chalkboard. Computers supplemented textbooks. Artificial intelligence is now transforming research. Every generation has experienced educational disruption. This one simply happens to fit inside a pocket.
One thing is becoming increasingly clear: YouTube has quietly rewritten the economics of the do-it-yourself movement. For generations, a loose cabinet door, a dripping tap or a damaged electrical outlet often meant calling a tradesperson. Today, the first call is frequently made to YouTube. Skilled carpenters, plumbers, electricians and handymen remain indispensable for complex or safety-critical work, but many straightforward maintenance tasks that once generated steady income are now being completed by homeowners who have acquired just enough knowledge to do the job themselves.
The University of TikTok may never award degrees, but it has already taught traditional education one invaluable lesson: people have not lost their appetite for learning. They have simply developed a different appetite for how they want to learn.
The institutions that embrace that reality rather than resist it may well become the world’s most successful universities of the future. After all, the world’s largest classroom no longer has walls. It simply has a “play” button.
