As Jamaica marks 50 years of health collaboration with the Government and people of Cuba, Opposition Spokesperson on Health, Alfred Dawes, is calling on the nation to pause in reflection and express gratitude for a partnership that has profoundly shaped our public health landscape.

“For five decades, the Cuban medical mission has stood shoulder to shoulder with Jamaica through times of crisis and calm alike. As a grateful nation, we say unequivocally: thank you,” Dr Dawes stated.

The presence of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Jamaica has strengthened hospital services, expanded specialist care, and supported rural and underserved communities that might otherwise have gone without critical medical attention. From emergency response to long-term system support, Cuban health professionals have consistently demonstrated excellence, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to service.

“This partnership is not merely diplomatic, it is humanitarian,” Dr Dawes emphasised. “It is measured in lives saved, families comforted, and communities restored. The Cuban medical bridge has never failed the people of Jamaica.”

Dr Dawes noted that this milestone must also serve as a moment of recommitment to deepen cooperation, to strengthen Jamaica’s own health capacity, and to uphold the spirit of solidarity that has defined Jamaica-Cuba relations for half a century.

“In a world too often divided, this 50-year partnership reminds us that collaboration in health is one of the highest expressions of international friendship,” he said. “Jamaica remains thankful, proud, and committed to sustaining this vital relationship for generations to come.”
