The People’s National Party’s Dr Alfred Dawes has been slapped with a defamation lawsuit over comments he made against Member of Parliament Donovan Williams and Medical Technologies (MediTech) Ltd regarding the now controversial $31 purchase of a neurosurgical drill.
Williams, the Central Kingston MP and MediTech, filed the suit in the Supreme Court on Monday, claiming defamation by Dawes at his media briefing on Tuesday, May 20.
The two are claiming that Dr Dawes caused damage to their stellar reputation by suggesting theft from the public’s purse and corruption regarding the recent purchase of the medical equipment.

The company and Williams are claiming the following:
- Damages for defamation, including exemplary and aggravated damages as well as claims for special damages
- Interest at such rate and for such period as the court thinks just on the amount awarded for special damages;
- An injunction restraining Dr Dawes, whether by himself or his servants or agents or otherwise, from further publishing or causing the said or similar statements defamatory of the claimants and each of them to be published
- Costs and attorney fees regarding the claim
- Such further and/or other relief the court deems just.
