A riveting conversation between Caribbean healthcare professional Dr. David Walcott and journalist Helen O’Hara, host of Lincoln College’s new video and audio podcast series, has highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, gene editing, and other digital technologies in revolutionising the field of medicine.
The podcast, which was released on June 11, under the topic ‘The Future of Global Medicine’, is part of a series of discussions currently being released by Lincoln College—one of Oxford University’s smaller London-based colleges, with just over 300 undergraduates.
‘The Future Unleashed’ podcast hosted by O’Hara serves as an avenue through which Lincoln College is paving the way for the celebration of its 600th anniversary in 2027. The podcast covers a wealth of topics including entertainment, global health, and space exploration with experts in their diverse fields.
A Lincoln alumnus and founder of Novamed, Walcott is one of several influential guests featured on the program. Other notable guests include Asha de Vos, a marine biologist who founded the Blue Whale Project in Sri Lanka; Jamie Shea, former secretary of NATO; Emily Mortimer, actress, producer, and screenwriter and Cara Hunter, best-selling crime novelist.
Dr Walcott said: “New technologies like AI will make global healthcare much more efficient. It can reduce processing inefficiencies and will also provide the workforce with additional tools to solve problems faster and will conserve energy and time to complete high-level tasks. It allows for data-supported care, enabling better decision-making on an individual basis for patient care.”
“Just imagine the impact that technologies like AI have on Caribbean countries and on improving health equity across the Latin American and Caribbean region,” he added.
During the approximately 40-minute-long episode, Dr Walcott talks about his journey from clinical medicine to creating impactful healthcare solutions in emerging markets. He also dived into topics such as the future of healthcare, addressing critical threats such as health inequity, ageing populations, rising rates of depression, and antimicrobial resistance with O’Hara, an acclaimed UK broadcaster and journalist.
Walcott shares insights on overcoming the challenges of integrating high-tech solutions in resource-limited settings, emphasising the importance of sustainable and equitable health services. His narrative weaves together personal evolution with a broader vision for a healthier, more equitable global society.
Dr Walcott has more than a decade of experience in the medical industry through his professional services and entrepreneurial contributions. Over the years, he has secured funding for innovative health projects in emerging markets like the Caribbean and Latin America. He has also actively advocated for health equity and improvement in health technologies particularly in the Caribbean.
