Rapper and mogul Dr Dre faces a $10-million lawsuit from his former divorce therapist, Dr Charles Sophy. The lawsuit alleges a “systematic and malicious campaign of harassment” that includes threats and homophobic rhetoric.
Sophy claims that after mediating Dr Dre’s divorce from ex-wife Nicole Young, he was subjected to a barrage of late-night texts, intimidation, and slurs that left him in fear for his safety. According to court documents, Sophy now wears a bulletproof vest when outside, is afraid to leave his home, and feels constantly on edge due to the alleged harassment.
The therapist began working with the couple in 2018 but ceased contact in 2021 after their divorce was finalised. The lawsuit states that 14 months later, Dr Dre initiated a campaign of abusive messages, including threats like “you’re going to have to pay” and other derogatory remarks.
Sophy recounts attempts to de-escalate the situation, but asserts that Dr Dre’s threats intensified. The lawsuit also alleges that Dr Dre once sent associates to impersonate FBI agents to unlawfully enter Sophy’s home.
Sophy is suing for civil harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress, seeking $10 million in damages. The case raises serious concerns given Dr Dre’s documented history of violence, prompting Sophy to take extensive security measures.
A jury trial has been requested.
