During the 2025 staging of the ‘How to Delegate Effectively’ seminar hosted by Make Your Mark Consultants, a participant raised a concern that many managers face but rarely discuss.

“I end up doing most of the work myself,” he said. “It feels faster that way.”

Several managers in the room nodded in agreement.

The situation is common in many organisations. Managers often take on too much responsibility, believing that completing tasks themselves ensures quality and speed. However, this approach often leads to burnout, delayed projects, and teams that never fully develop their capabilities.

Delegation, when done effectively, is not simply about assigning tasks. It is about achieving results while building the skills and confidence of the team.

Many managers struggle with letting go. Some fear mistakes will be made, while others believe it takes too much time to explain the work. Yet research consistently shows that strong delegation leads to higher productivity, stronger employee engagement, and better long-term performance.

Effective delegation begins with clarity. Managers must clearly communicate the expected outcome, explain why the task matters, and show how it connects to the organisation’s broader goals. When team members understand the purpose of their work, they are more likely to take ownership and deliver stronger results.

This leadership skill is especially important for Jamaica today.

“Delegation is not about giving away responsibility,” explains Dr Jacqueline Coke-Lloyd, managing director of Make Your Mark Consultants. “It is about developing people. When managers empower their teams to take ownership of meaningful work, they build confidence, strengthen performance, and create organisations that are capable of sustained growth.”

Businesses across the country are navigating talent retention challenges, rapid technological change, and increasing global competition.

Research from Gallup indicates that managers influence up to 70 per cent of employee engagement. When managers are skilled at guiding and empowering their teams, organisations benefit from higher productivity, stronger innovation, and improved customer service.

Delegation plays a critical role in building this capability. When managers trust their teams with meaningful responsibilities, employees gain new skills, confidence grows, and organisations become more resilient.

For Jamaican businesses, this means faster project delivery, stronger problem-solving, and more engaged employees.

In today’s dynamic environment, Jamaica cannot rely on managers who simply supervise. The country needs managers who can delegate effectively, develop their teams, and lead organisations toward sustainable growth.
