There will be an early dismissal of classes today at Campion College where tragedy struck yesterday when Second Form student, Rashad Richards died on the campus from an accident.

Classes are to be dismissed at noon, as the school goes through a period of grief counselling. The school says all co-curricular activities for the day are cancelled, and meetings with parents scheduled for this week are postponed until further notice.

Principal, Dr Lavare Henry says the school’s Guidance Department, supported by counsellors from other institutions will hold special sessions for the students in Rashad’s class, his teachers, members of the rugby team, and other students who were present at the time of the accident.

In addition, the school’s counsellors will also be available in the Guidance Department, and the Chaplaincy Team will be present to provide spiritual support and prayers. Form supervisors and teachers will also be meeting with their classes to provide support.

Rasheed died after he was struck in the head when a goalpost fell on top of him. It is understood that he was swinging on the goalpost as he waited to be picked up from school. Rasheed was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In a news release Tuesday night, the institution reported that the entire Campion College community is devastated by the loss, and extended its deepest condolences to Rashad’s family. The school says it is cooperating fully with relevant authorities regarding this incident. The statement said, “Our immediate focus is on supporting our students, staff and, most importantly, Rashad’s family during this extremely difficult period. The school has made counselling and pastoral care services available to all members of our community.”
