The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) has sought to dismiss reports that an Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) vehicle transporting ballot boxes in South St James plunged over a precipice in the Catadupa area after the close of the polls on February 26.
When contacted by Our Today, the public education officer at the ECJ Daynia Harper told our news team that an EOJ bus did not overturn over a precipice. However, she confirmed that there was an accident and the ballot boxes were secured.
No death or injury were reported concerning the incident.
The St James South Division is being contested by Kenroy Gordon of the People’s National Party (PNP) and Bernard Clifford of the Jamaica Labour Party in the municipality election.
Preliminary results from the EOJ up to last evening showed that Gordon was leading with some 1,532 votes, while Bernard was trailing behind with 1,153 votes.
The counting of ballots for the division continues.
