While addressing the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Minister of Education Youth and Information Fayval Williams defended the seven-year school programme for secondary students.

The Sixth Form Pathways Programme is currently in its infancy and, according to Williams, it is being implemented to ensure students have access to career guidance, have employable skills and personal and professional development.

Separated into a three-tier system, Williams added that the programme will allow students who dropped out of high school to register to be a part of the programme, providing they meet the age requirement and the necessary assessments are done to determine the most suitable sixth form pathway programme for them. The latter will be done with the help of guidance counsellors and career coaches.

The minster also noted that, for this academic year, fifth-form students would be able to have their graduation ceremony but, over time, the school leaving exercise will be phased out.
