The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information said it’s deeply saddened by the sudden passing of a Grade 6 student at Bull Savannah Primary and Infant School, in St Elizabeth, on Wednesday.

Reports received from the school’s Principal, Colin Cameron, indicate that the student collapsed in her classroom. She was immediately transported to the Thames Medical Complex in Junction, St Elizabeth, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Personnel from the ministry’s Regional team and Guidance and Counselling Unit were dispatched to the school to provide immediate support to students, staff and parents.

Permanent Secretary of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Dr Kasan Troupe, expressed profound sympathy. “The loss of a child is an immeasurable tragedy.  The entire education sector is mourning the loss of this student who was at the beginning of her educational and life’s journey.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her loved ones and assure them that the Ministry stands with them during this difficult time. We will provide counselling support and all necessary assistance to the school as they grieve this heartbreaking loss.”

The Ministry extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, classmates, teachers and wider school community. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this painful period of mourning.”

At a press conference this morning, Golding praised the efforts of the party machinery and announced the party’s historic gains, before pivoting to an extensive list of electoral concerns that he says warrant national scrutiny and reform.
