Edwin Allen girls and St Jago boys poised to claim Central Champs titles

Edwin Allen girls and St Jago boys are the early leaders of the Central Athletics Championships after day one which saw 10 records shattered at the GC Foster College on Tuesday.

After 19 of the 40 finals, Edwin Allen surged to 172 points and held a massive 40-point advantage over second-placed Holmwood Technical on 130 points. Hydel High are third with 115 points. Vere Technical on 101 points are in fourth with St Jago completing the top five on 49.5 points.

In the boys’ section, St Jago on 131 points has a narrow six-point lead over Edwin Allen on 125 points. Clarendon College are sitting in third spot with 78 points. Manchester High are fourth with 53 points ahead of St Catherine High in fifth on 42 points.

A plethora of records were broken highlighted by St Jago’s Jevaney Findlay who sped to an impressive 10.97 (0.2m/s), lowering the boys Class Three 100m from 11.36 held by Daniel Chambers since 2016.

Shemonique Hazle of Hydel High broke the girls’ Class One 100m of 11.72 taking it to 11.55 (1.5 m/s) while Dominica’s Kerelle Etienne of Edwin Allen erased the girls Class Two record clocking 11.56 (1.2 m/s).

Four records were broken in the 400m as Paul Henry of Foga Road High won the Boys’ Class One in 47.17, just dipping below the previous record of 47.44. In Class Three, the outstanding Khieme Cambell of St Jago established a new record clocking 51.63.

The girls were not to be outdone as in Class One, Kellyann Carr of Edwin Allen won in 52.57 and in Class Three, Tracey-Ann Evans of Holmwood Technical lowered the 55.76 to 54.81.

Cindy Rose of Holmwood Technical smashed the Girls Class One 1500m record stopping the clock at 4:38.92. the previous mark was held by Teressa Jacobs of Edwin Allen at 4:44.97 since 2016.

Ashara Frater of Vere won the girls’ 3000m open in record fashion clocking 10:15.24 while Shamoya Morris of Edwin Allen captured the girls’ Class one discus with a record throw of 50.34m.

There were two high jump record-equalling performances courtesy of Nikaro Johnson of St Jago boys in Class Two and in the girls’ Class 4, Kemoya Campbell of Edwin Allen.

Johnson of St Jago soared to 1.90m. The record is held jointly by St Jago’s Damar Marshall and Jordon Richards of Manchester High since 2016 and 2020 respectively.

Campbell leapt 1.55m and equalled the record held by Annishka McDonald since 2017.

The Championship conclude on Wednesday and based on the early results, Edwin Allen girls and St Jago boys look set to win the titles.
