Major questions are circulating on social media as reports emerge on Friday (September 23) that reigning Jamaican double Olympic champion and fastest woman alive, Elaine Thompson-Herah, is signalling her intent to leave the Bruce James-led MVP Track Club.
Our Today, making checks on Thompson-Herah’s verified Instagram page, notes the star athlete no longer makes any reference to being a Nike brand ambassador.
The 27-year-old’s Instagram feed is also considerably smaller with 58 posts when last compared with 97 status updates made as at August 24.
On Elaine Thompson-Herah’s Twitter page, however, her ties to MVP are still reflected.
According to a report from Nationwide News, Thompson-Herah delivered a letter to the MVP club, as well as to US sporting brand Nike.
MVP president, Bruce James, declared that negotiations are still underway with Thompson-Herah as the rumour mill churns in overtime that the Jamaican sprint queen is gearing up for a major switch to rival brand Puma.
At the same time, a Jamaica Gleaner report quoted head coach Stephen Francis as stating that he would not speak on any communication between himself and his athletes.
Francis, however, acknowledged that he would not be surprised if Thompson-Herah was not in training when it resumes in October.
Just last month, Thompson-Herah sparked a firestorm on Twitter after Jamaican users noticed her temporary omission of Nike as one of her sponsors.
The omission came around the same time supporters of the athlete criticised Nike for its media spotlight of American Sha’Carri Richardson, who finished ninth in the women’s 100m event at the Prefontaine Classic, while seemingly paying little attention to Thompson-Herah.
The Jamaican, finishing in 10.54 seconds, clocked the second-fastest time in history to win the same race.
While it was not clear when the initial change in her Instagram bio was made, Nike was later readded to the sponsors’ list as of Tuesday afternoon.
