Elaine Thompson-Herah ran a season-best 7.04 but finished second in the 60m dash at the ORLEN – Capernicus Cup World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Poland today (February 22).

The triple Tokyo Olympics gold medallist got out behind the 24-year-old Polish sprinter Ewa Swoboda, who executed her usual flyer out of the blocks to run a meet record 7.03 for the victory.

Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland was third in a personal best 7.14.

Swoboda owns the top four fastest times in the world this year including the 7.00 world-lead she set on February 11 at the Orlen Cup in Lodz. She provided a taste of what was to come in the preliminary round when she flew out of the blocks and cruised to a comfortable 7.06. The Jamaican ran a relaxed 7.14 to win her heat.

In the final Swoboda managed to establish the expected early lead, but Thompson-Herah began closing mid-race before simply running out of room.

The Jamaican’s loss meant that The Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton was the only Caribbean winner at the meet when she ran 7.90 in the 60m hurdles.

Reeta Huiske of Finland ran 7.96 for second, just holding off Luca Kozak of Hungary who was third in 7.97.
