Eltham High became the first team into the semi-finals of the ISSA Wata Manning Cup following their 2-0 win over Vauxhall High at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Tuesday, while Calabar had the dubious distinction of being the first team eliminated from the quarter finals.
Eltham High, under the guidance of Gregory Allen, has been quietly and effectively getting the job done, led by their top marksman, Santana Headley, who scored both goals to push his tally to 15 for the season.
Eltham are on six points and cannot be overtaken by either Vauxhall or STATHS, both on three points, but more importantly, they will face each other on Friday. Eltham are into their second semi-final, having reached it in 2006 before being eliminated by Excelsior.
Meanwhile, title favourites Jamaica College (JC) sent an ominous warning to the rest of the teams with a commanding 4-0 demolition of Charlie Smith in their top of the table Zone A clash at Stadium East.
The experienced Jabarie Howell scored twice, including a brilliant solo effort from well inside his own half, beating players like they were cones and walking past the goalkeeper, Julis Clarke, and slotted home into an empty net.
Jamone Lyle also scored twice, and it was a statement win by JC as they grabbed pole position on Zone A with six points, three more than Charlie Smith on three points.
Hydel High and Excelsior are pointless, but both teams will meet on Wednesday, looking to get their first points in the quarterfinal round. If the game is drawn, then JC are through to the semis.
Meanwhile, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) reignited their challenge, whipping Calabar High 4-1 and moving to three points in Zone B.
Marvin Henry scored twice for STATHS in the 50th and 86th minutes and was ably assisted by Kennardo Gordon and Justin Johnson. O’Bryan Marks had given Calabar a fifth-minute lead.
Calabar, on the other hand, having lost their second consecutive game in the round, are out of the Manning Cup. Their 20-year wait for Manning Cup success continues, having won the Cup in 2005.
Vauxhall, playing in their first quarterfinal round, are still in contention for a semi-final spot, sitting on three points and face STATHS for that second semi-final spot.
