Shadow Minister on Gender Affairs Denise Daley says reports that a 91-year-old woman from Westmoreland was sexually assaulted highlights the urgency to address the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in Jamaica.
In a statement on the incident, Daley condemned the actions of those responsible for the “reprehensible assault”. She furhter demanded justice for the elderly woman.
“This abhorrent act against a defenceless 91-year-old woman is not only a crime against an individual but an assault on the values and humanity of our society. It is a stark reminder that the vulnerable among us, particularly the elderly, are in dire need of our protection and care,” said Daley.
“Enough is enough,” she declared, calling for a collective stance against such atrocities.
“The time for action is now. We cannot continue to tolerate a culture that allows the vulnerable to be preyed upon. We must unite as a community to protect our elders and ensure that they can live their lives free from fear and violence,” she added.

The shadow gender minister further urged the authorities to swiftly investigate the case and to ensure that justice is served.
“We owe it to the survivor and to every citizen who has experienced the trauma of gender-based violence to create a society where everyone feels safe, respected, and protected,” she emphasised.
Police reports indicate that the 91-year-old was at her home on Sunday night when she was awakened by strange noises.
A man then entered her bedroom and sexually assaulted her.
She contacted a neighbour, who called the police and reported the incident. She was transferred to the hospital for medical evaluation.
