Have a graduation, wedding, dinner, party? Need your face beat for the occasion? ‘Slaytopia’ is the destination to be!

Makeup enthusiast Tahjaya Dixon has been dedicating her time and talents to giving clients, both women and men, the ‘lipstick effect’.

The ‘lipstick effect’ is a known psychological phenomenon in which wearing makeup can give individuals a confidence boost by making them feel more physically attractive, increasing feelings of self-esteem, attitude, and personality.

Growing up, Dixon constantly sifted through careers, none of which involved entrepreneurship. The idea to delve into the makeup industry came about when she developed an interest in makeup.

At the beginning of her journey, Dixon would practise on her family and friends. She also did a few odd jobs, but at that time her practice was not a business. It was the encouragement from family and friends that further propelled her to offer makeup as a service.

“The products I needed to practise were very expensive and hard to obtain in Jamaica. I sourced the products at a reasonable price and started to retail them. After practising and getting products from the source, family and friends influenced me to start offering makeup as a service,” Dixon shared with Our Today.

Following the completion of college, Dixon started her internship. At this point in her life, she had experienced both ends of the rope, knowing what it was like to work for someone else and knowing what it was like to do something on her own. Realising that her interest leaned more into the world of entrepreneurship, this envigorated her decision to work for herself.

Dixon describes the support she has been receiving as overwhelming, but she is grateful nonetheless.

“The support, now that I have been consistently putting in the work, has been overwhelming to say the least. But I am grateful for the tremendous amount that I have been receiving,” Dixon shared.

She described the beginning of her journey as something she did for herself, but, over time, it blossomed into something bigger and better.

“My business didn’t start out for money or my customers, it was all for me, but the drive and passion that I poured into it, makes every other aspect of my business significant and worthwhile.”

The businesswomen says this experience has taught her to be bold when facing risks and to be more meticulous in her executions.

Almost five years old, Slaytopia has found various ways to keep customers engaged. Now, the company does giveaway promotions, weekly deals and also has a referral programme. Dixon also offers lash extension services and caters to events such as weddings, graduations, parties and dinners at reasonable prices.

Slaytopia’s owner has high expectations for the future, hoping to encounter persons just as passionate as she is. “The future for my business is limitless. However, I’d really love to expand and grow especially with other makeup artists/enthusiasts interested and passionate just like me,” Dixon said.
