It can only go one way when an employee takes on ownership.

When you sign on the dotted line and take on a job, you are monitored by your employer and your achievements are weighed. If you don’t have ownership, you have to serve those upstairs.

Enzo Maresca found this out and was sacked as Chelsea’s Head Coach after fighting with ownership. He was let go on New Year’s Day following Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Tuesday.

Chelsea now face EPL title contenders Manchester City next without a full-time coach, needing to win games to secure a Champions League spot this season. The team will go through an unsettled period.

The team under Maresca has floundered this season, winning just one of their last seven Premier League matches, dropping 20 points from leading positions both at home and in Europe.

Maresca has been in talks to take over from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City next season.

The Chelsea ownership team may have felt  he was distracted from the task at hand and was therefore not totally committed to Chelsea.

Then there was Maresca’s eyebrow-raising comments and his feeling there was too much interference in his handling and management of the team.

Sky Sports presenter David Jones read out a statement purported to have come from within Chelsea which may be closer to why the club parted ways with its Italian coach.

“The 48-hour comment was directed at the medical team at Stanford Bridge that he wasn’t happy with. There is a suggestion Maresca went against the advise of the medical team at Chelsea on a number of occasions

“Playing players returning from injury longer than advised, lending to their being re-injured this season. He did not face the media on Tuesday and he wasn’t ill we are being told.

“It is also being briefed that he spoke to Manchester City and Juventus since October. Despite briefing the club (Chelsea) they thought it was disrespectful.

“The feeling at Chelsea is that he has a lack of mental fortitude and emotional maturity.”

Ouch! That is stinging and harsh! The top brass at Chelsea wanted to see the back of Enzo Maresca and found him more trouble than he was worth.

The official statement on being released from his position at Chelsea read: “ Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company. During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World. These achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track. We wish Enzo well in the future.”

Chelsea are in fifth position in the EPL with 30 points.

It faces Manchester City on Sunday, who are in second spot with 41 points.
