The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has been confirmed as the winner of the majority of municipalities in the February 26 Local Government Election.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) said after the final count of ballots in all 228 divisions ended on Thursday, February 29, including all the ballots for the mayoral election for the Municipality of Portmore, the JLP was confirmed with the majority in seven municipalities. It said the People’s National Party (PNP) won five. The PNP also won the mayoral contest, along with the majority of divisions in the Portmore Municipality.
The key Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) ended in a tie, with both political parties scoring 20 divisions each. The party with the most popular votes will assume control of the KSAMC.
“With all ballots counted, the results indicate that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidates have won the majority of the seats in seven parishes, while the People’s National Party (PNP) has won five. Kingston and St. Andrew ended in a tie with the PNP and the JLP winning 20 seats each. The PNP won the majority of the divisions and the position of Mayor of the Municipality of Portmore,” the EOJ outlined in a media release late last night.
