The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says it will receive nominations of candidates for the September general election and local government by-elections on Monday (August 18) at designated nomination centres across the 63 constituencies.
In a statement on Friday, the EOJ disclosed that the nomination of candidates for the general election will take place from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, while nominations for the by-elections will be accepted between 12 noon and 2:00 pm.
Nomination procedures
As a procedural formality, the EOJ advised that on nomination day, any person wishing to register as a candidate for the parliamentary election is required to:
- Complete the nomination form signed by any ten or more electors registered to vote in the constituency;
- Return the form to the returning officer during the designated four-hour window at the place specified in the election notice as the designated venue on the day appointed as nomination day; and
- Pay the nomination fee of J$15,000 to the returning officer.
Nomination procedures for the local government by-elections
On nomination day, any person wishing to register as a candidate is required to:
- Complete the nomination form signed by any six or more electors qualified to vote in the electoral division for which the election is to be held.
- Return the form to the returning officer between 12 noon and 2:00 pm at the place specified in the Election Notice as the designated venue on the day appointed as nomination day; and
- Pay the nomination fee of J$3,000 to the returning officer.
The EOJ further indicated that nomination fees must be paid in banknotes as its returning officers will not accept debit/credit cards or cheque payments.
