Equatorial Guinea’s Government has announced new measures to tighten oversight in government offices following the leak of videos showing National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) Director Baltasar Ebang Engonga engaged in sexual acts at his workplace.
The tapes, which circulated widely on social media, have sparked a public outcry and prompted swift action from government officials.
Vice-President Nguema Obiang Mangue confirmed on Tuesday, November 5, that the Government would implement stricter security measures in response to the scandal.
The videos, which show the official with several women, some linked to other powerful figures, were allegedly found during a raid on the official’s home as part of a wider corruption investigation. Although the authenticity of the videos remains unverified, their release has raised serious concerns about the conduct of some government officials.
In response, the Government will install security cameras in all ministry offices and increase the presence of security personnel to prevent further incidents.
“The actions seen in these videos are unacceptable and harm the image of the Government,” a statement said. “Immediate steps are being taken to prevent such behaviour.”
Officials involved in the scandal will face suspension, while those responsible for securing the buildings where the videos were filmed will be reprimanded. The new measures are part of an effort to restore public trust and address concerns about the Government’s handling of misconduct.
Equatorial Guinea, a country of 1.7 million people, has been under the long rule of President Teodoro Obiang since 1979. The Government has long faced criticism over its lack of political freedoms and human rights record, and this scandal has added to the growing concerns about corruption and abuse of power.
The fallout from the leaked tapes continues to unfold as citizens await further action.
