European football has taken a firm stand against FIFA’s proposal to sell stakes in its major competitions, with all 55 UEFA member associations agreeing to boycott World Cups if the plan moves forward.

The decision came during an emergency meeting called after FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed plans to create a commercial company that would allow private investors to purchase shares in events such as the World Cup.

UEFA has strongly opposed the proposal, warning that football’s biggest tournaments should remain controlled by the sport’s governing bodies rather than outside investors. The organisation says the World Cup represents decades of history built by players, teams and fans around the world.

The potential boycott would apply to all FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup, if FIFA members approve Infantino’s plan.

The first major test could come in October during the Women’s World Cup playoffs, where UEFA’s position could affect participation. Reports from the emergency meeting described strong opposition among European officials, with concerns raised over how the proposal was developed.

It has also emerged that some FIFA vice presidents, including England Football Association chairwoman Debbie Hewitt, were not aware of the discussions surrounding the plan before it was announced.
