Excelsior High crowned themselves all-island champion after beating St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) 2-0 in the Olivier Shield final at the Stadium East field on Thursday.

Terrence Williams opened the scoring in the 10th minute from the penalty spot and Kivann Salmon sealed the win, firing home in the 87th minute.

It was Excelsior High’s third lien on the Olivier Shield and their first outright win after sharing the titles with Rusea’s High in 1993 and in 2003 with Frome Technical.

Excelsior High’s coach Keon Broderick said his team showed character and showed that they can balance schoolwork and sports.

“It’s a tremendous feeling when you can see how we go about putting this programme together. It’s not just about football, it’s about the entire student. Each player balanced academics with football,” said Broderick, before sprinting off into the arms of his players to celebrate.

Meanwhile, losing coach Omar Wedderburn of STETHS said his team didn’t show up, but he was proud of them.

“I didn’t think we came out with that fighting, power, free spirit today. The two teams have similar qualities. We didn’t do our best today, not our very best,” said Wedderburn.

“Sorry we couldn’t pull this one off, but better things are to come,” said Wedderburn as he addressed his travelling fans. “Keep that smile on your face.”
