As Jamaica approaches Heroes Weekend, the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport has arranged an exciting list of event, ready to commemorate the national heroes and celebrate the rich history and culture that define Jamaica.

This year will be dubbed ‘Resilient and Strong’ as the nation gives recognition and appreciation for the sacrifices made by our heroes: Paul Bogle, George William Gordon, Nanny of the Maroons, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Sir Alexander Bustamante, Samuel Sharpe, and Norman Washington Manley.

“Through the tenacity and militancy of these heroes, brokered on the platform of resilience, strength
and fearlessness, they were able to resist, renounce, and repudiate the efforts of then colonial
powers and enslavers to dehumanize and disenfranchise them, and ultimately upended the systems
of the transatlantic trade in Africans and racialized chattel enslavement,” said Olivia Grange, minister of culture, gender, entertainment and sport.

She added that it is through events such as Heritage Week “that we cement our proud Heritage, especially in the psyche of our children and generations to come”.

With a diverse list of activities and events planned, the weekend and entire month of October promises to be a vibrant and memorable experience for all citizens. Here is a list of activities to consider.
