The Atlanta Falcons have made a series of roster cuts in recent days, but an untimely injury on the offensive line forced their hand.
Looking to fill a sudden gap, the NFL franchise traded for offensive tackle Michael Jerrell, a second-year player from the Seattle Seahawks.
Originally drafted in the sixth round last year, Jerrell saw action in 10 games for Seattle, starting three of them primarily at right tackle. While his performance was inconsistent, earning a 46.4 grade from Pro Football Focus (ranking 82nd out of 86 tackles who logged at least 250 snaps), the Falcons see potential in the young lineman.
The move comes after Atlanta lost starting right tackle Kaleb McGary to a significant injury. With McGary expected to miss extended time, bringing in Jerrell helps shore up a position that suddenly became a concern.
The Falcons also add more depth to an offensive line tasked with protecting second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The Falcons are aiming for a playoff run this season, and it’s their offence that gives them the best shot.
With a talented group of playmakers and a young quarterback under centre, the unit has the firepower to keep Atlanta competitive week in and week out.
